I don't think Metallica and Les' style would of gone well together.
He can play almost anything, he's really flexible. I think he could easily change his style to fit Metallica's style.

actaually, while Brockie is a sub-standard Guitarist, I aways thought he was a damn good bass player. his Death Piggy stuff

The way he can sing and play always got me. I've always liked playing along to Death Piggy songs. I do fine with the bassline, but throw on the vocals and I get all screwed up.
